The Maersk Honam Tragedy reminds Traders of the risks of International Trade: the vessel carrying 12,416 TEU's (20' equivalent boxes) caught fire March 6th off the Coast of Oman, en route from Asia to the Med; Five Seamen died, hundreds of containers were lost. Maersk declared General Average, a Maritime Law principle enabling a Vessel Owner to get everyone with Cargo on board to contribute towards the loss. So for the Cargo assumed to still be in good order, owners will have to dish out Salvage Security of 42.5% and general average security of 11.5% to take possession of their Goods. Would they be better off had their Cargo burned, thus becoming a total loss? No, as the maximum compensation an ocean carrier will pay out in such cases is between US$500 and US$900 per container, depending on their Bill of Lading terms. The solution: have adequate Cargo Insurance to get fully compensated for losses in transit. And Cargo Insurance covers General Average too! Luckily, such incidents are rare however always consider Cargo Insurance to mitigate your risks.
